AI story generator: a novel that teaches, one chapter at a time

Pick something you want to learn and a world to learn it in. Gnothi writes a continuing novel where the lesson happens in the plot. Each chapter is narrated, runs about half an hour and arrives in your podcast app.

Most AI story makers write one story from one prompt. Gnothi keeps the same story going, remembers what already happened, and can take its lesson from your journal instead.

A story that teaches

You pick the lesson. It happens in the plot, and nobody in the story tells you what to do.

Name what you want to learn and a world to learn it in: fantasy, sci-fi, cyberpunk, a literary novel. Gnothi writes a continuing novel with that lesson inside it. Say the subject is investing. You might get a space-freighter crew whose quartermaster won't bet the whole profit on one cargo, because if one buyer walks, they still eat. Nobody lectures you. You just want to know if they make it.

A made-up world does not get to make up the method. Before a chapter is written, each lesson in it is marked literal, adapted or metaphorical, and ordinary subjects lean literal, so a cyberpunk founder learning Claude Code still hears Claude Code named. All the lessons together take at most 60% of a chapter, so the story always keeps at least 40%.

Each subject gets a syllabus that records what every chapter covered. You can read it and edit it, and the next chapter builds on the last one instead of circling back. Rust, sourdough, the Peloponnesian War: subjects like these work well. If you'd rather skip the story, the same subjects run as a straight audio course.

One story, continued chapter by chapter

A Logbook keeps chapter 40 consistent with chapter 3.

A one-shot story generator hands you a story and moves on. A Gnothi Series keeps the same one going. Every chapter updates a Logbook of characters, events, places and standing facts, such as who is carrying what or how much money is left, and the next chapter is written from it. It sits in its own tab, where you can read it and correct it.

Writers can steer a serial of their own. Choose a style (Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, Literary, Parable or Memoir) or write your own, then set the story arc. Between chapters, write a Series Direction to say where the story should go, and the next chapter reads it once. Fix a detail in the Logbook or add one the model missed, and the next chapter works from your version.

Make the next chapter whenever you want one, or set a daily, weekly, biweekly or monthly schedule and let chapters arrive on their own. A Series has no planned ending unless you give it one: set a target chapter and it can stop there as a finished book.

A Parable told from your own entries

Or let your journal pick the lesson.

The journal is optional. If you keep one, write the way you already do: where you got stuck, a decision you keep putting off, a hard conversation. Connect all of it, only chosen tags, or none, and what you've written since the last chapter goes into planning the next one.

Then run two Series on the same entries. One gives your weeks back plainly, in order. The other is a Parable: waystations and river crossings, a market town, a mountain that stays in view for days. A stranger met at one crossing may come back later with a need of their own, and nobody on the road explains the road. It's a story you'd keep listening to for its own sake.

If you track habits or numbers in Fields, add the Mirror segment. What you've recorded turns up in the chapter as something that happens. No chart, no verdict at the end.

An AI audiobook, narrated a chapter at a time

Every chapter is narrated as soon as it exists. There is no audio switch to find.

Each chapter runs about half an hour and comes with a title, teaser and show notes. Every Series is already a podcast: turn its feed on, subscribe in the podcast app you already use, and new chapters arrive like episodes. A new show stays private until you publish it, and its feed address is unlisted.

Free accounts hear the default narrator. The one-time unlock that comes with any top-up adds the other three preset voices, a voice cloned from a short recording, or one you describe. It also lets you switch a show to multi-voice narration, where the characters get voices of their own, closer to an audio drama than a reading. That mode bills each chapter by usage.

To read instead, export the finished chapters as an EPUB with a table of contents, or read every Series on an e-reader through an OPDS catalog. A Series doesn't export as one audiobook file, but the same unlock narrates a book you upload yourself: an EPUB, PDF, .txt or .md becomes one audio file.

One story from a group's notes

A tabletop campaign, a study group, a book club, or family writing together.

The game master writes up each session, and the next chapter of the campaign's novel comes from those notes, narrated. Everyone at the table subscribes to the feed.

Players can add their side of it. Each one tags the entries that belong to the campaign and shares that tag with the game master. In the Logbook, each player character is tied to the player behind it, so that player's notes shape what their character wants. What reaches the chapter is the AI's summary of each shared entry, never the text itself.

Joining a group and sharing notes at the Full tier are free. Owning the group comes with the one-time unlock.

Common questions

Is Gnothi an interactive story app?

Between chapters, yes. You don't pick from options every few lines. You write a Series Direction, correct the Logbook, or write in your journal, and the next chapter picks it up. A group can steer one story together the same way.

How long is a chapter?

About half an hour. Current chapters of Continue Without Me, a show published from Gnothi, run about 31 minutes, and a chapter can run longer when the material calls for it.

Is it free?

Making an account is free, and new accounts start with free credits. Each chapter spends credits. One-time top-ups run from $10 to $200, and any top-up also brings the one-time unlock for voices, group ownership and audiobooks from your own files.

Does it need my journal?

No. A Series can run from its premise and lessons alone. If you connect your journal, you choose how much it reads: everything, only chosen tags, everything except chosen tags, or nothing. You can change that later.

Can it work as an AI audiobook generator for a book I already have?

Yes, with the one-time unlock. Upload an EPUB, PDF, .txt or .md and Gnothi narrates it as one audio file, without ads. A story Gnothi writes arrives chapter by chapter in its feed instead.
